The Criminology of Edwin Sutherland - Mark S Gaylord

Edwin sutherland sociology

Edwin Sutherland (1883-1950) was a prominent and influential sociologist and criminologist. Throughout his career, he published a number of highly influential articles and books 1956; Schuessler 1973; and Gaylord and Galliher 1988). The Sutherland legacy in the sociology of crime is thus well established and secure. In fact, as recently as 1979 Gibbons argued that the "evidence is incon- vertible that Edwin Sutherland was the most important contributor to American criminology to have appeared to date." In his differential association theory Edwin Sutherland proposes that criminal behaviour is learned. A person will be delinquent if there are prior attitudes that favour violations of the law, as opposed to attitudes that negatively evaluate violations of the law.
